Description

Following on the heels of the successful first ever Kiwigrass in 2019, it's Kiwigrass 2020. All of the best New Zealand bluegrass bands are joined by bands from the United States, Australia and beyond for a weekend of celebrating the music pioneered by Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, and Lester Flatt.

Kiwigrass Festival (31 Jan - 2 Feb 2020)

The sound of banjo, bass, dobro, guitar, fiddle, and mandolin will fill the air along the banks of the beautiful Lake Karāpiro, at the Don Rowlands Centre on the Mighty River Domain. Concerts, workshops, instrument makers, and jam sessions are only the start of what is a great all-ages event.

Kiwigrass Academy  (29-30 Jan 2020)

Expand your musical horizons at the new Kiwigrass Academy –  two days of in-depth tuition and participation leading in to the 2020 Kiwigrass Festival. Classes will be taught by our headline artists, teaching guitar, mandolin, banjo (3 finger style), fiddle, bass, and dobro. [Possible addtion: claw hammer banjo, if there is a demand]. In addition to instrument lessons, electives are offered in song-writing, harmony singing, instrument maintenance, band dynamics, and many other topics. Kiwigrass is New Zealand’s own national festival of Bluegrass Music. It is produced by the Kiwigrass Trust, a non-profit association of bluegrass musicians and supporters in New Zealand, with help and guidance from the Australasian Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association of Australia (ABOTMA). The festival aims to present performances of bluegrass music, related workshops, and opportunities for attendees to share with each other through jamming and picking sessions. In 2020, Kiwigrass will be held at Lake Karāpiro, at the Mighty River Domain in Cambridge, Waikato, from 31 January – 2 February, 2020.
